Kedarnath Yatra by sadhus of the Peetham (June 12-17, 2014)

Posted on July 10, 2014

The sadhus and sannyasis of Adi Shankara Brahmavidya Peeth, Uttarkashi went on a yatra to Kedarnath. The pilgrimage was quite a memorable and sacred experience.

While the scars of last year’s devastating floods were still visible during the 22 km trek – the arrangements and facilities for pilgrims by the government were excellent. All boarding and lodging was provided to all pilgrims free of cost by the government. The tented accommodation provided was neat and convenient. The number of pilgrims was quite less apparently due to last year’s disaster. Many seem to be unaware that the trek to Kedarnath is now quite safe and very well-organised. The new trek route is 22 km long but very safe and the ascent is gentle, steady and easily negotiable. (the earlier route was 14 km but at a few places the ascent was quite steep.) The photos of this Kedar yatra are available in the gallery. We request all devotees and well-wishers of the Peeth to share this information regarding the safe and well-organised government facilities enroute to Kedarnath to all those who may be interested.

An interesting coincidence was that during the stay of the swamis at Kedarnath (i.e., June 16, 2014), a new statue of Adi Shankaracharya was being installed at the Samadhi sthal (where Adi Shankaracharya left his mortal body in 832 A.D.), by the Kaladi-to-Kedar mission of Colonel (Retd) Kini and his team members. The earlier shrine had got washed away due to last year’s floods although the old statue was somehow recovered. The swamis participated in the installation ceremony of this new statue brought from Kerala and did Shankara Bhashya Parayanam at the temple site.

The trek was undertaken by Swami Haribrahmendranandaji, Swami Hariomanandaji, Swami Janardanandaji, Sri Kannanji and later joined by Swami Aananda Tirtha ji on the return journey. Incidentally, Swami Aanandaji went on foot all the way from near Uttarkashi. via the mountain trail passing through picturesque Panwali Bugyal (high altitude meadow) to reach Kedarnath after 6-7 days of trekking.

Brihadaranyaka Satram, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

(Himalaya Rishi Sangamam 2013)

November 15-19, 2013

This five day Satra (meaning ‘a great sacrifice’) was recently held at the Vailoppilli Sanskriti Bhavanam, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. This aesthetic venue was once part of the Travancore King’s palace and is an architectural and cultural marvel. It provided an appropriate setting for the Satram. The topic for discussion  was the bRhadAraNyaka upaniShad of the shukla-yajur-veda with the shAnkara bhAShyam.

The program was organised by several Vedanta students led by Dr.Saju Kaushik and other devotees who are part of Sadhu Gopalaswami Students’ Circle, Vattiyoorkavu Ashram. The audience too was given lunch every noon. An average of eighty regular students were thus able to attend the the day-long program from morning till evening.

The mUla pArAyaNam of the prasthAna-trayI and discourses on the six chapters of the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad were well-attended. The Swamijis and Sadhus from Uttarkashi and Rishikesh with Swami Medhanandaji of Kailash Ashram as the adhyaksha (President) participated in this event. The topics of the Brihadaranyaka are both deep and at times abstruse ; sincere efforts were made by the revered sadhus to explain these topics in Vedanta to the audience in an accessible manner. There were also interactive question and answer sessions with the audience.

During this Satram, the malayalam book ‘PAtanjala yoga sUtram – vyAsa bhAShyam’ by Acharya Swami Haribrahmendrananda ji and Swami Hariomananda, published by ‘The Heritage’ publishers was also released. This book is a unique Malayalam book being the only available translation of the original Sanskrit work – PAtanjala Yoga Sutra with Vyasa’s commentary. The learned Acharya and Swamiji have collated many valuable ideas on the Yoga Sutras from other sanskrit commentaries like the Tattva Vaisharadi etc. too and have made this book a very complete and deep work on Yoga philosophy. All students of Yoga and Vedanta who can read Malayalam will greatly benefit from this work.

After the Satram was concluded, a visit to the Travancore King’s Palace with a bhiksha for all the sadhus was organised.
